In a way, we've always taken the South Shore Line for granted, just as we did with the North Shore Line when it was operating. It's always been here providing passenger and freight service since the first decade of the previous century. The South Shore, under NICTD, has been undergoing a transformation--new stations, new track, new catenary--that has practically transformed the railroad from an Insull-era interurban into a modern electric railroad. Tonight we want to go back and revisit the days when heavy 1920s-era orange-and-maroon interurban cars raced through Northern Indiana, when they still rumbled over the streets of East Chicago, Michigan City, and South Bend. Tonight's program is a visual appreciation of the South Shore Line as it was from the late 1940s up to the early '80s. So sit back, settle into your Byzantine plush bucket seat, and take a trip with us.
We will also have a short newscast preceding the regular program.
This program is open to all CERA members and guests. Mark this date on your calendar!
