 Remembering the North Shore Line

Friday, Jan. 12, 2024 at 7 p.m. CST, live via Zoom

Presented by John Nicholson

It has been over 60 years since the North Shore Line was abandoned, yet interest in Samuel Insull's “super interurban” remains strong. Other interurbans boasted longer mileage and larger rosters, but there was something unique and special about the North Shore Line that resonates with traction enthusiasts to this day. What made the North Shore so special that it inspires such strong interest in fans who were born decades after the line’s demise?

Join us as we take a visual tour back in time to reminisce about the North Shore Line in photographs from its modest beginnings up to the final day of operation. We’ll look back on the line from early back-and-white photographs to the Kodachrome images of the 1960s. We’ll see early operation over the “L,” local service on the Shore Line Route, fast limiteds over the Skokie Valley Route, plus the deluxe services that made the North Shore so special, such as dining car service and operation of the Electroliners. We’ll also take a look at all the people whose dedication and skill kept this interurban running long after its contemporaries had ceased operation.

This program is open to all—CERA members and guests. Running time will be approximately 90 minutes.
