Remembering the North Shore Line,
Part 2

Beyond the Mainline:

A Trip over the Shore Line Route, Mundelein Branch, and the Streetcars in Waukegan and Milwaukee

Presented by John Nicholson

On this night, we’ll go beyond the hourly limiteds and Electroliners running on the Skokie Valley Route to Milwaukee, and instead focus on the other sections of the system.

We’ll begin with a quick trip over the “L” to in order to travel over the North Shore’s original line on the Shore Line Route. Heavy riding, short trips, and frequent stops best described the passenger service on this route.

We’ll also travel over the North Shore’s only branch line, the route to Mundelein, where passenger service consisted of expresses to and from Chicago mixed in with a few lonely runs of the Lake Bluff-Waukegan local. There was significant freight traffic over the line as the North Shore maintained carload interchange connections with the EJ&E at Rondout and the Soo Line at Mundelein.

Lastly we’ll ride over North Shore Line’s streetcars that ran in Waukegan (until 1947) and Milwaukee (until 1951) and conclude our two-part series in remembrance of Sam Insull’s Super Interurban.

This program will also be presented on Zoom (CERA members only) for those members unable to attend the meeting in person.

Running time: 90 minutes.

We will send Zoom links to all members for the livestream, which begins at 7 p.m. (CST), as does the in-person program in the Mezzanine-level Clubroom at 899 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago.
