We will examine rail transit in the Mountain States. The largest of the cities and the largest of the systems is Denver. It opened its first light rail line in 1994. Seven openings later, the system has reached almost 60 miles.
Salt Lake City light rail began operation in 1999. Today, the system reaches almost 45 miles. In Arizona, there are two major cities with urban rail transit. Phoenix is the largest, opening in 2009 and now reaching close to 26 miles.
In May 2022, a three-mile-long streetcar line opened in suburban Tempe. And finally, in Tucson, a streetcar line links the University of Arizona with “restaurant row,” the Amtrak station, and downtown Electrified electric transit is booming in the Mountain states!
